As an adult living and working in the 21st century, you’re bombarded with a constant crush of escalating demands.

Your boss wants you to do more at work, your spouse wants you to do more at home, and your kids need you to give more of yourself.

More, more, more!

Most of us feel an obligation to heed this call for excess and find ourselves buried at the bottom of an endless to-do list that grows taller every day.

It’s clear that we need to reduce our commitments — not likely — or become more productive.

The problem is, even the best task-tracking tools and organization techniques won’t help much if you don’t also work on your mindset. Without an internal change to the way you approach problems, a rut is inevitable.

Fortunately, inspiration for innovation is all around, and one of the best sources is also one of the most accessible: fiction.

It may sound unreasonable to suggest adding more to your schedule — reading novels and short stories — could improve your productivity, but you’re missing a wonderful opportunity for improvement if literature is not part of your life.

Because, if you’re not reading fiction on a regular basis, chance are …

1. Your Ideas Are Stale

If every day unfolds just like the one before it, your imagination has slipped into hibernate mode. Sliding into that rut may be comfortable and keep your life’s machinery chugging along, but it will never allow you to improve.

Only by embracing new ideas can you discover more efficient methods for getting work done. Fiction of all kinds takes your mind into areas it would normally avoid and helps you make mental connections that carry over to the real world.

Walter Mitty won’t teach you how to finish your reports earlier, but he just might spawn the daydream that will lead to your next breakthrough.

2. You Lack Empathy

You can only do so much on your own, either at home or on the job, and recruiting others to help in your cause requires strong communication.

The most effective way to build a productive dialog is to truly understand the points of view of your co-workers or family members, and then to demonstrate that understanding in your conversations. This type of empathy will break down barriers to collaboration faster than any type of brute force, and it’s a skill you can cultivate by exposing yourself to a wide range of world views.

Every time you pick up a novel, you slip into some one else’s skin and gain an appreciation for his situation. And, even though you may never encounter a “real” character like Jay Gatsby or Boo Radley, reading their stories is great practice for developing empathy.

3. You Can’t Focus

With every email message that pops into your inbox and every “urgent” problem that your boss lays on your desk, your mental focus becomes a bit more frayed.

When you’re working on that big proposal for the Smith account, your mind wanders to the monthly report you have to get done by Friday, and there is always a list of system problems or customer complaints just waiting for you to address.

In short, you can’t concentrate.

Reading fiction is one of the best ways to begin building your ability to shut out other distractions and focus on one task for an extended period of time. To try this out, pick a long novel you’ve wanted to tackle for awhile and commit to finishing it this month. Giving yourself a deadline will force you to schedule reading time, and you will be amazed at how focused you are during those precious hours when you can retreat from your busy world.

4. Your Writing Is Weak

Written communication has always been key to success in business, and that has never been more true than now, when email is the lifeblood of so many companies. If you want to accomplish all you can, you must be able to express your ideas and needs in writing.

Beyond email messages, though, effective documentation of policies and guidelines to shepherd your organization is crucial if you expect everyone to operate a full capacity and toward common goals.

In order to become a better writer, you need to read great writing as often as possible. Only by finding examples of what we can become, and then working toward those ideals, are we able to improve in any area of life. Literature is our best repository of exemplary writing.

Reading fiction won’t turn you into a human dynamo on its own, but you severely limit your potential and productivity if you don’t devour novels and short stories on a regular basis.

Is Your Inner Chatterbox Running Your Life?

Inside each of our heads lives a chatterbox that runs all day long. It reminds us of everything we’ve ever done wrong, makes negative assumptions about what everyone else thinks of us, and tells us that we simply don’t measure up. It’s sneaky and quiet, but powerful.

When I was first introduced to my inner chatterbox, I was 22 years old. I was sitting in an AA meeting, and this wonderful wise old man told me I have a voice in my head that never stops – a little chatterbox. He told me to practice listening for it, catch it in action and shut it down immediately.

He warned me that if I didn’t, it would be in my head, constantly threatening to sabotage my every effort to stay sober and get happy.

After that conversation, I knew I had to commit first to the task of becoming aware of the chatterbox, and then monitoring it. But before we can shut the chatterbox up, we have to learn to recognize its voice and notice when it’s running its proverbial mouth.

I had to really train myself to tune in and hear the voice, since it stealthily sends messages through our subconscious minds.

So, I started working at trying to catch my chatterbox going off. Usually, by the time I caught it, I’d already be in a funk or a state of simmering anxiety. Because I wasn’t adept at hearing the silent chatter in my head, I learned to pay attention to when my mood switched.

The moment I noticed that I had just gone from feeling okay to feeling down, anxious, or just plain icky, I’d check in with what I had just said to myself. And sure enough, it was always something negative.

“Megan, you’re not as good, smart, funny, pretty, intelligent, or worthy as everyone else”, it told me.

One of the first catch phrases I realized my little chatterbox was continually recycling was “You’re everybody’s second choice”.

Walking into a party or social setting, my sneaky chatterbox would always tag along. It would be there to tell me that nobody in the room truly wants to talk to me, even while I was chatting with someone that chose to approach me and strike up a conversation.

My chatterbox would reason that this was only because that person couldn’t find anyone else to talk to. They were just killing time with me until the better person came along – the person they actually wanted to talk to.

I would naturally compare myself to every person in that room, and it was always a losing battle.

The thing is, as soon as we pull out our measuring sticks and measure ourselves against others, we cannot win.

In our own minds, we’ll never measure up to anyone else because we are always comparing the inside of ourselves – the parts we don’t like, the things we’re ashamed of, and everything we believe is wrong with us – to the outside of others.

Meaning, we look no deeper than the things that appear to be “together” in someone else’s life.

Since we can really only see the best parts of others, those parts they’re willing to show to the world, we’re setting ourselves up for automatic failure in this competition we’ve created in our heads.

Start listening for your chatterbox and shut it down.  Remember, your first clue that it has gone off will always be a shift in how you feel.

When you notice you’re feeling anxious, angry or uneasy, stop and ask what you’ve just said to yourself.  Start today: every time you catch yourself saying something negative, begin replacing that negative thought with a thought that feels better!

I spent a lot of years waiting for the ‘feeling’ to settle in that would tell me that I was okay. That finally, I was loveable enough, good enough, smart enough, etc. But here’s what I learned – you’ll never feel it, until you first make a decision to believe it.

How you are feeling right now is also how you are thinking right now. Begin by changing your inner chatter.

7 Simple Micro Habits That Will Guarantee Success

“Motivation makes us start to move toward our goals, but it is our habits that determine if we reach them.”

Habits are the way we think, feel and react to different situations based on repetition of certain mental experiences. Old habits are very hard to break, and new ones are even harder to form as the certain patterns we use to repeat are set in our neural pathways in such a way that it is difficult and time-consuming to break and form new ones.

Therefore, we have to carefully choose the habits that will in grain in us the ability to react in such a way that would be beneficial for us.

Seven habits have had a major impact on my life.

All of them can be completed in individually in 20 minutes or less so, they will not take up to much of your time. That why I call them my micro habits.

They have ingrained in me the qualities I would need to succeed and if you adopt these habits, there is a very good chance you will feel the same way as I do.

1) Reading

This may be the most important of all the seven micro habits, just 20 minutes of daily reading could have massive benefits.

Reading is a strong mental activity and it builds fundamental skills that one would need, it wards of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, while building up your self-discipline as although everyone knows they should read most of us have many distractions and taking out even 20 minutes a day can be difficult.

Other than self-discipline, reading also builds up our self-esteem as the more you read, the more you know, and would be considered as an expert on the topic you read, which could be quite a confidence booster.

2) Power ups

Power ups is a thing I do, which raises a person’s testosterone levels, giving them higher confidence and self-belief.

So how to do Power ups?

Well, power ups are a certain physical and verbal acts that can be done anywhere.

You may be feeling nervous and you need to give a very important presentation in front of your boss or maybe in front of big prospective clients, do a power up before going in to give the presentation.

You can go to the washroom and in front of the mirror do the Rocky victory stand and visualize yourself giving the best presentation of your life.

Psychologist Amy Cuddy has found out in her research that by doing power positions you are able to increase the Testosterone level by 20% and decrease your stress hormone Cortisol by 30%.

3) A page a day

Try maintaining a personal journal and to at least write a page a day. Keeping and writing in a journal has many benefits to stop.

By writing your thoughts, your beliefs, and values you better able to understand who you are? What you want in life? What you are willing to do to achieve it? And to many other such questions.

The other main reason for maintaining a journal is that you’re able to track your mental and emotional development and that by doing so are able to steer your life in a positive direction achieving real personal growth.

4) Gratitude Beads

Get a pair of prayer beads and just as soon as you get up and go to sleep, for one whole round on each bead say one thing that you are truly grateful for in your life.

Doing this reminds you daily of all that you have, you could be grateful for good friends, family, business/job, health and all that which is important to you.

No amount of words would begin to describe the feeling of relief and happiness you will get from doing this.

5) Smiling

Well, this is kind of a given everyone knows how important it is to smile to laugh, but I would like to add some of the benefits of smiling here.

The act of smiling is very pleasing to the eye and attractive to everyone and would draw positive vibes from all those with whom you may come in contact with.

Smiling also reduces the level of the stress hormone Cortisol, While triggering the release of endorphins which increases our level of happiness and the best thing about it is that the triggering mechanism is the movement of the muscles in your face so your brain can’t really differentiate between a true from the heart smile or one in which we are trying to lift our mood by just trying to stay positive, and releases the endorphins in both cases.

So even if you are sad, disappointed, and depressed smiling will help elevate your mood.

6) Mental detox

Just like our bodies need to detox from all the toxins produced by eating fatty foods and alcohol, our minds also need to detox from all the negativity, stress, and anxiety.

I have a 20 minute detox routine that I do daily, which consists of a 5 minute Scottish shower of which 3 minutes of hot water then 2 minutes of ice-cold water, the Scottish shower helps reduce stress and increase ones level of alertness(Kind of jump starting your brain with ice-cold water shock).

The next step is to for 10 minutes of positive visualizations and the last five minutes are spent reading inspirational, motivational quotes and short stories.

7) Pause to wonder

When is the last time you have taken a moment’s pause to admire the beauty around you.

Do you remember the first time you felt rain? The First time saw the ocean?

Most of us wouldn’t be able to forget such moments, even if we tried too.

So, what is stopping us now?

Why can’t we connect with our environment in our daily hustle and bustle to make ends meet all really worth it, if only even for a second you are able to take a Pause to wonder?

Over the last couple of years a lot of my friends asked me what they can do to improve their relationships. Of course they expected me to give them the same advice as everyone else gives.

Buy her a nice present. Tell her that she is beautiful. Spend a bit more time with her. While that is all well and good, they are usually a bit surprised when I tell them that regular meditation can be all that is needed to improve their relationship.

None of the guys I spoke to has expected this answer, which is proof enough that the majority of people are not aware of the fabulous correlation between meditation and fulfilling relationships. Most people have heard about meditation and have a rough idea about it. Others regard it as some esoteric mumbo jumbo without benefits.

The truth is that meditation has not only plenty of scientific benefits that can improve your health and reduce your stress hormones. It also has the power to change your relationships. After reading about the following five reasons why meditation inevitably improves your relationship you will realize that breathing in and out has more power over your relationship than buying expensive presents.

1. You suddenly have the power to prevent arguments  

The number one complaint that I hear from both men and women who are in a relationship is that they are sick and tired of arguing. Please correct if I am wrong, but deep down everybody wants to enjoy a harmonic and happy relationship without drama and without stress.

The amazing thing about meditation is that it teaches you to calm down and to relax in stressful situations. Having an argument with your loved one can definitely be seen as a stressful situation and meditation helps you to deal with it.

It helps you to consciously observe your own behavior and the behavior of your partner. This allows you to prevent an argument before it can even arise. People who don’t have this level of awareness go from one argument to another without knowing how they could have prevented it. 

2. Meditation teaches you to handle drama with patience  

What if you did your best to prevent an argument, but the disagreement between you and your partner is too big to be ignored? In this case meditation teaches you to handle drama with patience and in a state of complete relaxation.

While most people get hysteric and defensive whenever they are faced with a bit drama in their relationship, you stay calm and act considerate. You don’t see the need to become defensive or even aggressive. During your regular meditation sessions you’ve learned to accept the current situation and to improve it in a conscious way.

3. You become aware of your partners needs and wants

A lot of people describe the process that you experience during meditation as conscious awakening. II think it is no secret that a lot of people in our faced-paced society lost the connection to their desires, needs and wants. Everybody is functioning and rushing without even knowing why they do what they do.

Meditation teaches you to look inside of yourself and to connect with your true needs and wants. Once you are able to see your own needs and wants, it will be very easy for you to recognize the needs and wants of other people. This inevitably improves your relationship.

You eventually reach a state of mind where you have to shake your head when you look at all the other couples in your social circle. You suddenly don’t understand how they can be so blind and ignore the wants and needs of their partners, even though they are so obvious. 

4. Meditation allows a long and fulfilling relationship

Meditation has countless health benefits. It reduces your blood pressures, it prevents heart diseases and it leads to more longevity. I don’t know about you, but when I think about enjoying a long and fulfilled relationship with the love of my life I don’t think about getting a heart attack at 45.

Meditating, especially when you can convince your partner to also give it a shot, allows you to enjoy a long and happy relationship without worrying about your health. I don’t say that meditation replaces a healthy diet and the regular checks with the doctor. All I want to say is that it has the scientifically proven power to make your life and therefore your relationship longer and better.

5. Your increased happiness is contagious

Did you know that meditation can make you happier? For some people it sounds unbelievable, but I know from my own experience that meditating for less than ten minutes a day has the power to put a smile on your face.

The best thing about this is that happiness is contagious. If meditating a couple of minutes a day has the power to transform you from the human equivalent of the grumpy cat into a happy person, your partner will recognize this transformation. Your increased happiness level makes it nearly impossible for your partner to not become happier. The inevitable result of this interplay is a fulfilling relationship.

10 Life Predicaments That Tried To Derail My Dreams

During my life journey, I was using painful and uncontrollable situations as motivation to keep going. We all know life is not easy, it teaches us difficult lessons that make us scratch our heads and ask why me? The reason I’m writing this post is to inspire and give people hope. Are going through some tough times right now? Don’t give up. Here are ten things that happen to me that did not deter me from living a positive life.

  1. School  I attended One of the lowest ranking schools in California. When I was in Jr High my math teacher decided to beat me up in front of the school faculty. An IPhone would have come in handy that day. By the way, the teacher retired with honors years later. At 17 I dropped out of high school and got my GED. But I kept moving forward and did not give up.
  1. City I was born and raised in a small border town Calexico, CA.  Not only does it have the worst unemployment rate in the US at over 25% it’s one of the top 3 hottest places in the US.  It gets over 120 degrees in the summer time. By the way, when I was younger I tried to fry an egg on the pavement. If you like your eggs over easy Calexico is the place for YOU!. But I kept moving forward chasing my dream.
  1. Drugs Illegal substances were a part of life especially living in a border town. At age 13 I started smoking marijuana and experimented with cocaine at 16. Years later I started selling drugs. Fortune lately I wasn’t good at it. After a couple sales, I was arrested for selling to an undercover police officer. After successfully completing the court requirements I kept moving forward and not give up.
  1. Hospital During my journey I landed in the ER four Unfortunately, they were all stress related. One time I am experiencing cloudiness in my eyes and could not see. I thought I was having a stroke or going blind. It was all work related stress. My advice is to find a job that feels like a hobby. But I kept moving forward and not give up.
  1. Homeless In 2012 I was homeless living in a hotel with a family of four. After I had run out of money, we stayed at a friend’s living room floor for a couple of months. There was hardly any room for my son who is 6’3” tall. But I kept moving forward and not give up.
  1. Money Not having enough money to pursue my dream motivated me to keep going. For example, I recently wrote and published my book for $200.00 by outsourcing all the work overseas. My book cover cost me $5.50 on fiverr.com. At one time, money was a roadblock in my mission but I kept moving forward and not give up.
  1. 25 jobs The average jobs someone has in one lifetime is 12-13. I’ve had 25 in 20 years searching for my dream job. I probably experience over 200 interviews and submitted over 1000 applications. If you don’t like where you work leave, it’s that simple. Find your passion and happiness by doing something you love to do. Having so many jobs did not stop me achieving my dreams. Go with your gut feeling and don’t listen to anyone.
  1. Speaking Growing up I was always getting teased by my brothers for speaking and writing in Spanglish, which is 50% English and 50% Spanish. I would always mix both languages when speaking, it was embarrassing. You think that stop me from following my dreams. Obviously not going to school did not help. Most of my friends spoke Spanish, so that’s all I knew. “You are the average of five people you hang out with” But I kept moving forward and not give up.
  1. Depression Combining all my trials and tribulations were too much for my mind to handle. In 2007, I experienced what most people call a nervous breakdown. My mind reached its limit point.  Imagine living a 30-minute movie in your mind of the worse horror movies combined, and you’re the victim in the film. The thought of suicide did come up during that scary episode. But I kept moving forward and not give up.
  1. Health After two MRIs they discovered a brain tumor when my daughter was two. She had no mobility at the time. After installing two shunts that are valves, my daughter began to walk.  Now she’s 17 and doing great!! A couple of years ago my wife was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis, and she was only in her 40s.  After continuous fighting, she has managed to defy all odds and increase her bone density 75%.  But we kept moving forward and never gave up. 

Are you giving up on your dreams?  From speaking Spanglish to winning two international speech contest at Toastmasters.  Not being able to write a sentence to writing a book and becoming a blog contributor to three major websites.  From going through a nervous break down to having a peace of mind and helping others improve their lives. You have the potential to do great things. Life is too short to be unhappy. Keep moving forward and don’t ever give up. You never know it could be worse.

If you are similar to me, then you like being helpful. You enjoy reaching out to people that could use a hand. When people struggle and are able to move forward through my help, it gives me a great sense of pleasure and I feel like I helped someone grow.

A lot of times this leads to great friendships and strong connections. You start building trust towards each other and share thoughts that others aren’t supposed to hear.

This can be valuable, especially in work environments. When a tough day has taken the best of you and you just need to blow off some steam, you discuss your situation with that trustworthy person.

But there are others, that use your kindness to their advantage!

I don’t consider myself as a weak person but my good will often takes the better of me and it can lead to situations where I find it hard to say no.

I have witnessed how some colleagues started to throw their workload on my back and gradually made my working life living hell. I wish I could say this was a one time situation, but it happened to me near enough all the jobs I had.Reaching out and helping people

Say Goodbye To Bullies!

When I stepped outside of university like a chick hatching out of his egg, I was eager to spread my wings and fly into the big corporate world. I quickly got my first job and immediately realized how different my expectations were.

As I mentioned above, there were bullies in each workplace. Sometimes I wonder if they genuinely didn’t know they were being mean or if they just enjoyed bullying the new kid!

What I did learn, was to live with the situation. Now don’t get me wrong! I didn’t let them talk down to me on a daily basis. I highly discourage you from doing that. Instead try the following:

  • Be nice to them! – Yes! If you are nice to your enemy, it confuses them, takes them off guard and eventually they start liking you. Offer them your pen when they need one or tell them their outfit looks good. This is a good entry to ‘friendship’ .
  • Avoid them by all means – If you are in a position where you don’t necessarily need to talk to them every second, try shifting your queries and questions to other members of the team. Only get involved with your bully if no one else is around.

  • Move seats – I deliberately sat as far away as I could from all my enemies. Just as I imagined, everyone else really enjoyed my company, as I am quite a joyful person, like to joke around and build friendships. A small bonus to that is, that you can see the bully get angrier that your company makes other people prefer you to them.
  • Confront them – Now this is a bit of a tougher decision. If you really have difficulties and you find it really hard to cope, try approaching your rival. Simply ask to have a word with them and be subtle about how to tell them how you feel. I usually tend to talk about the general team, because I realized that people around the office have similar thoughts. It’s just that the bully prefers to target one person. So you can say something along the lines of: ‘Don’t get me wrong, but maybe you could be a bit more selective about the words you use when talking to others. I feel like some of us aren’t too happy with your choice of words when you are joking’. Personally I don’t like confrontations, but there are times when you just have to go through with it.
  • Plan B – When all of the above fails, I would talk to the manager. I have been through every possible scenario and tried my best with some people. But there are times when you just have to put your foot down. Tell your manager how you feel and how you’ve tried to change the situation. Trust me that this will tame them a little. But they will try to get you back. If your manager might be the issue, go to your HR department and tell them how you feel.

Serious Situation

If you think you can lead a normal life with a negative person in the group, try to realize the seriousness of the situation.

Numerous times I have seen people either flip out or run out of the office and burst into tears. If you have someone making fun of you, throwing tons of work at you or just generally treat you very mean, it can lead to a lot of negative issues such as:

  • Depression
  • Hating work
  • Bad personal relationships
  • Work efficiency decreases
  • Bad sleep

These are just a few points that come to surface once you feel like you’re being mocked on a daily basis.

So take it from me, if you are stuck in a situation like this, do something to get rid of it. You don’t want to wake up every morning dreading to go to work, nor do you want to reflect your emotions on your performance.

The longer you try to live with it, the harder it will be to remove yourself from this relationship. Therefore stand up for yourself and handle the moment wisely.

How’s life going, smooth sailing, right?

Well, of course there are a few hiccups every now and then.

But when something comes up isn’t it so much easier to learn from someone else’s mistakes, especially when they point them out for you.

It’s way better than trying to figure things out on your own, making the same cycle of mistakes until you finally learn the hard way.

But unfortunately you don’t have it that easy. At least not with the most important parts.

Sure you’ll go to school for a number of decades and learn scores of helpful information. But none of it will teach you how to live a happy and successful life.

Trigonometry and chemistry will seem simple when compared to having to navigate your way through life. They don’t teach you that in school. They leave the really hard stuff for you to sort out.

Not to say that reading and writing along with math and science isn’t important, just that finding your path and being happy in your everyday life is just as important. Just because it wasn’t in a textbook doesn’t mean you don’t need it.

The fact of the matter is you don’t stop learning. You become a student of life.  And in order to get to where you want to be in a timely manner you have to be a quick learner, or have one hell of a cheat sheet.

Life Lessons                    

Life lessons are among the most important things that you’ll learn after completing your academic career. They teach you something that forever changes how you handle things from that point on.

They’re important because identifying and learning them can be the difference between being stuck in the same place for eternity or moving forward effectively and making progress.

I think it’s safe to say we’d all rather move on and find happiness rather than spin our wheels in the same place of misery forever.

The only issue is, how do you learn the stuff you don’t know you need or you don’t know is important beforehand.

There isn’t any class that teaches you all about the important, hard life lessons. You end up stumbling on to them at different parts in your life.

Some of them even take decades to grasp and learn.

If you’re lucky you might get a heads up from grandpa about one or two. But chances are he’s going to tell you when you’re a little too young to understand. So it falls on deaf ears.

By the time you put two and two together, you’re already stuck.

Most people end up learning important life lessons the hard way, so they allow everyone else to do the same.

But that ends here because there’s really no point in you suffering through the same process everyone else did.

Getting a Head of the Curve

Your outcome is going to be very different from theirs because you will walk through life knowing what it took others much of their life to gain.

You’re going to have the advantage of wisdom before having the experience. Typically you gain the wisdom after having the experience. Now, just think of what you’ll gain from being knowledgeable going into it.

You’ll completely avoid the series of mistakes and setbacks that take place before you actually learn, not to mention the frustration and drama that comes along with it.

You’ll be one smart cookie. You’ll know exactly what to do and what to take from the experience, making it easier to succeed and navigate your way to happiness.

So let’s skip all the drama.

  1. Forgiveness is all about you

Holding on to a grudge may seem like you’re punishing someone for hurting you, but you’re doing more harm to yourself. As long as you’re focused on this you can’t truly be happy.

While forgiving them may seem like letting them get off easy, because the grudge hinders you more than it hurts them, you’re actually not. In fact, it has nothing to do with them.

You’re actually letting go of the past so that you can focus on your present and future. Let karma take care of them.

  1. Perseverance equals success

You can accomplish a lot by trying.

Trying to do something is usually the hardest part. And if you keep going on you will be surprised by the results.

You can’t lose if you refuse to give up.

  1. No one else can make you happy

Hollywood portrays these romantic stories about how someone else can change the whole disposition of your life but that’s not realistic.

Other people cannot focus solely on your happiness. They have other things that they’d like to accomplish too.

Being happy is your responsibility. No one else can do that for you.

Besides, you’re the only one who truly knows what makes you happy anyway.

  1. You don’t have all the time in the world

Whoever said it’s never too late probably didn’t own a watch or work according to a deadline.  Time is unlimited but uncontrollable so you can run out of it.

Don’t waste your time today thinking that you’ll always have tomorrow. You’ll just be prolonging your own misery.

If there is something you want to do or goal you want to achieve start now. Stop putting things off.

You don’t want to wake up 15-20 years from now realizing how you wasted your time and evaded your happiness.

  1. You can’t succeed without failing

Many people take failure as a sign that they should give up. But the fact of the matter is having some type of setback is just part of the process.

It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re heading down the wrong path.

Instead of throwing in the towel, try to learn something from your mistake and then take another stab at it.

Think of each failure as a way to perfect your path to success.

  1. Worrying is a waste of time

Worrying is an odd emotion because it stirs up anxiety and frustration without any benefits.

It makes you uneasy and clouds your thoughts. If you find yourself worrying about something figure out a way to prevent or handle the situation, focus on a solution instead.

If there’s nothing you can do, change your focus. There’s no point in keeping yourself in that state of mind.

  1. You only know what you know

Many people will make it seem like you need to be an expert at something before you can do it. But they’re wrong.

Don’t get caught up in information overload, it’ll stop you in your tracks.

It’s impossible to know everything. So you can’t wait until you’re a full-fledged expert before you take action.  That’s just another form of procrastination.

Accept that there will be some things that you’ll have to learn along the way, and that’s perfectly fine.

Use it Now

After many, many years of school you still won’t know it all but you don’t have to spend your entire life trying to figure things out.

Sure there will be a few more things you’ll pick up along the way but it will be incredibly helpful to know the important stuff beforehand.

Maneuvering through life’s challenges will be simpler for you now because you already have the important lessons and just need to apply the knowledge.

Today you are that much closer to happiness and success because you’ve learned the lessons of academics and life.

Have you ever heard the phrase “find your voice”? Your voice is how other people know and recognize your work when they encounter it, and the most unmistakable voices resonate deeply with their audience. They are the through-line in your life and body of work, and are often sourced from a deep and compelling “why”.

Many people believe that your voice is something that you go digging for once, and then forever have it. However, this is not consistent with how the best and brightest grow. In truth, people with resonant, compelling voices develop them over time by acting, observing, and re-directing. Success comes in layers, not all at once. It is a process.

Of his early days of developing his voice, the famed comedian Steve Martin wrote “I was seeking comic originality, and fame fell on me as a by-product. The course was more plodding than heroic: I did not strive valiantly against the doubters but took incremental steps studded with a few intuitive leaps.” This is reflective of how many brilliant contributors develop a unique voice. If you want to follow in their path, you must pay attention to the patterns in your environment, and be willing to take small, intuitive leaps each day. These small leaps prepare you for the big ones that inevitably follow. However, these leaps are not always obvious. It’s easy to settle into habitual patterns in life and work, and over time you can miss some key opportunities to step out and carve your own niche.

Here are a few questions you can ask to help you identify a few places where you might be ready to take a leap:

Where are you paralyzed with fear? Often the places our intuition tells us we should explore with our work are the places we’re most afraid to go. The weight of uncertainty can overwhelm us and cause us to shrink back from action. What is one small, strategic risk you can take today to begin moving in the direction of your fear?

Where are you afraid of looking incompetent? Sometimes we don’t experiment and learn new skills because we don’t want to compromise the opinion others hold of us. As a result, we stop growing because we’re not taking risks and learning new skills. What one skill will you commit to learning a little each day, even if you appear to be incompetent at first, so that you can continue on a trajectory of growth?

Where have you fallen into comfort mode? The love of comfort is often the enemy of greatness in our lives and work. It’s easy to default to the comfortable choice, but small decisions to settle in the moment eventually add up to a compromised body of work. Look for places where you settle for a default mode of action, or where you are busily bored, but not really applying your unique passions and skills to your work. What small change of pattern or habit can you make today to help you shake things up?

Where do you have a relational outage? If you want to develop a unique, compelling voice, you must stay connected to others who will speak truth to you. Who tells you when you’re off-base, acting like someone you’re not, or generally sidestepping your best work? Who in your life speaks unvarnished truth to you?

Have the courage to develop your own voice rather than spending your life imitating others. It is a great tragedy to spend your life building someone else’s body of work.
